“Let’s go now,” Lionel said.

“What about Judd?” Mark said.

“Do what you want,” Lionel said. “I’m heading for the woods.”

Mark moved through the opening, but before Lionel could follow, Mark scampered back inside. Lionel heard chopper blades. When the helicopter flew toward the river, Lionel followed Mark outside. They crawled to a small hill. They tucked their arms close to their bodies and rolled to the bottom, then crouched and hurried into a wooded area.

When they stopped to catch their breath, Mark said, “No way Judd can hold them off.”

Lionel backtracked and found a drainpipe in a clump of bushes. He pulled out his flashlight and peered inside.

“Judd said there was a landing strip somewhere near here.”

The helicopter grew louder.
